When my neighbor knocked on the door and handed me a small bag filled with strange, dark, twisted pieces, I honestly didn’t know what to think. They looked almost burnt, wrinkled, and oddly shaped, nothing like anything I’d bought at a store before. He just smiled and said, “You’ll like these,” then walked away. No instructions. Heating it too much can mute its flavor, so it’s usually added late or eaten raw.

Beyond taste, black garlic is also known for its health benefits. The fermentation process increases antioxidants and makes it gentler on the stomach than raw garlic. Many people eat a clove a day on its own, almost like a snack. That’s why neighbors sometimes give it away — once someone makes a batch, they often end up with more than they can use.

So if you’re staring at a bag of these and wondering what on earth to do with them, don’t throw them out. You were just handed something surprisingly valuable, both in flavor and nutrition. Peel one, take a small bite, and you’ll quickly understand why people swear by it.
