The dispatcher answered calmly. “This is 911. What’s your emergency?”
A little boy whispered, scared and unsure. “My mom and dad… they’re in the room. Please come quickly.”
“Are you safe, sweetheart?” the dispatcher asked. “Are they hurting each other?”
“No,” the boy said. “But they’re doing something weird. They said it was a surprise. I don’t know what it is. Can you come?”
Police took no chances. Within minutes, two patrol cars pulled up outside the house, lights flashing but sirens off. Officers rushed inside and found the boy sitting on the couch, shaking.
One officer knelt down and asked gently, “Where are your parents right now?”
The boy pointed down the hallway. “In their room. Please be careful.”
The officers exchanged looks, hands near their radios, and slowly opened the bedroom door—
Only to find the parents on the bed, tangled in wrapping paper, balloons, and ribbons.
They jumped in shock.
“We were wrapping his birthday presents!” the mom yelled. “We told him not to come in!”
The officer sighed, pinched the bridge of his nose, and said, “Next time… just lock the door.”
From the hallway, the little boy smiled and said, “So… the surprise isn’t ruined?”
