It was supposed to be the happiest night of her life.
For their 3-year anniversary, her boyfriend insisted on taking her somewhere much fancier than usual. He told her to “dress nice,” hinted about a surprise, and acted nervous all day — classic signs of a proposal. She spent hours getting ready, imagining the moment he’d finally get down on one knee.
But the moment they sat down, something felt off.
He kept checking his phone. He barely touched his food. He couldn’t make eye contact. Still, she tried to stay hopeful — maybe he was just anxious about popping the question.
Then dessert arrived.
The waiter placed a slice of cake in front of her… with a message written in icing. She leaned forward, smiling — until she read the words.
Her heart dropped.
Instead of a proposal, instead of something loving, the message said:

The room went silent.
Her boyfriend looked relieved, as if he’d finally gotten something off his chest. She stood up, walked out without a word, paid for her half, and left him sitting alone at the table.
